Critical Choices:  A Tool to Increase Job Search and Retention Success!

Critical Choices is an online, self-directed career exploration curriculum for unemployed learners who need more confidence and direction before entering the job market.   For minimal cost, it can strengthens users’ career planning and decision-making skills, and can be a useful supplement to instruction and coaching in job readiness, adult basic education, or youth career counseling settings.

Critical Choices’ 15 modules are organized into four main sections:

  •  Who Am I?Helps participants better understand themselves
  • Where Am I Going?Helps participants learn where they best fit in the  world of work
  • How Do I Get There?Helps participants create action plans to achieve their career goals
  • How Do I Stay There?  Gives participants tips for success in the job setting

 Critical Choices can help you improve your program results:

  • It strengthens users’ ability to communicate their strengths and job interests 
  • It clarifies careers that will be a “good fit”, improving the quality of job matches
  • It provides a "support community" through discussions, online chats, and links to other Web resources 
  • Its multi-media format supports multiple forms of learning
  • It improves users’ ability to use the Internet as a learning and job search resource

Critical Choices is available at low cost via the Internet and does not require additional hardware or software.  It includes downloadable participant and facilitator manuals, and additional facilitator training is available.

Critical Choices is based on curriculum of the YMCA Alliance in Chicago, a Training, Inc. affiliate.  It is a collaboration between Training, Inc. National Association, the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago, and Northern Illinois University , and was funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
